DEAN SERGENT is a Managing Partner of Canaan Resource Partners, and serves as a general partner of Canaan Resource Partners Drilling Fund LP. In addition to his fund management responsibilities, Mr. Sergent’s efforts are specifically directed toward evaluation of prospective investments, including risk analysis and assessment. Additionally, he serves along with Mr. Penton as a general partner of Canaan’s Fund X.
Mr. Sergent has been associated with Canaan as an employee or consultant for over nine years, and during that time has been instrumental in the development of a portfolio model, as well as analytical techniques and risk-analysis software to properly evaluate resource plays. His 30 years of reservoir engineering and acquisition experience have yielded a network of industry relationships that continue to play a key role in ongoing investments.
Mr. Sergent graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Marietta College in 1985 with a B.S. degree in petroleum engineering and is a registered professional engineer. He earned an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin. Dean began his career in 1985 with Tenneco Oil Company in Oklahoma City, where he gained significant experience in acquisitions and risk analysis. Following the completion of his MBA, he returned to Oklahoma City to launch and direct an acquisition effort for Raydon Exploration. Prior to joining Canaan, Mr. Sergent was employed by Devon Energy Corporation, where he held a management position in Devon’s Barnett Shale asset group. During that time, he supervised a budget in excess of $800 million and participated in a research effort to better understand the producing characteristics of shales.
